11 – 15 October 2023
Frieze London, Booth D05 and Frieze Masters, Booth D01

  • At Frieze London, a solo booth of works by Barbara-Chase Riboud, including sculptures from her Standing Black Woman of Venice series
  • At Frieze Masters, a Philip Guston focus featuring rare early works and a major late painting in conjunction with the Guston retrospective at Tate Modern, as well as works by modern masters including Louise Bourgeois, Frank Bowling, Alexander Calder and Eva Hesse

This year at Frieze London, Hauser & Wirth proudly presents a solo booth of work by the acclaimed Paris-based, American artist Barbara Chase-Riboud. The presentation features three bronze sculptures from the series Standing Black Woman of Venice (1969-2020), as well as six recent works made from silk pierced on paper in her signature automatic writing.

The gallery also returns to Frieze Masters with a presentation that focuses on one of the great luminaries of 20th-century art, Philip Guston (1913 – 1980), coinciding with the major travelling retrospective ‘Philip Guston,’ opening on 5 October 2023 at Tate Modern. The booth will present a selection of important paintings and works on paper by Guston from the early 1950s until the late 1970s, as well as works by modern masters who were working in and around New York at the same time as Guston. These include artists from the gallery’s roster such as Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Lee Lozano, Maria Lassnig, Jack Whitten, Alexander Calder, Frank Bowling and more. Once again, the gallery will partner with Moretti Fine Art.

Hauser & Wirth London
Alongside the fair, the immersive exhibition ‘Avery Singer. Free Fall’ will open on 10 October across both spaces of Hauser & Wirth London, marking the artist’s first solo show in the UK. As part of Hauser & Wirth’s global learning platform, this exhibition will be complemented by an Education Lab for the first time in the London gallery. As part of the Frieze VIP program, Avery Singer will be in conversation with Simon Denny, moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist on Thursday 12 October at 10am at Hauser & Wirth London.

Museum Exhibitions and Events in London
The gallery’s artists will also feature in a number of major institutional shows in London during Frieze week. In addition to ‘Philip Guston’ at Tate Modern, the first retrospective of US artist Nicole Eisenman will open at Whitechapel Gallery on 11 October. Also on view during Frieze is the landmark exhibition ‘The Mother & The Weaver: Art from the Ursula Hauser Collection’ at the Foundling Museum, featuring works by Louise Bourgeois, Luchita Hurtado, Maria Lassnig and Pipilotti Rist. As part of the Frieze VIP program, British artist Thomas J Price will be in conversation with Gus Casely-Hayford at Frieze Masters on Wednesday 11 October at 3pm, on occasion of the artist’s display at the V&A which sets his work in dialogue with the historic collections.

Paris+ par Art Basel

18 – 22 October 2023
Booth B02

  • Hauser & Wirth opens new Paris space with a debut show by Henry Taylor
  • Works by Lee Lozano and Mike Kelley at the fair, alongside solo shows at Bourse de Commerce
  • Highlights include works by Mark Bradford, George Condo, Ed Clark, Camille Henrot and Nicolas Party

Celebrating the opening of its first permanent location in Paris, Hauser & Wirth returns to Paris+ par Art Basel this year with a presentation that showcases the gallery’s diverse roster. This coincides with major institutional shows in the city from the gallery’s artists, including solo exhibitions on Lee Lozano and Mike Kelley at Bourse de Commerce and ‘Lorna Simpson x Gaelle Choisne’ at Acacias Art Center as part of Reiffers Art Initiative. The gallery’s booth will include works by George Condo, Camille Henrot, Paul McCarthy, Gary Simmons, Ed Clark, Luchita Hurtado, Ellen Gallagher and more. Hauser & Wirth Paris will open on 14 October 2023 in the lead up to Paris+ par Art Basel, inaugurated by a solo exhibition debuting works by Henry Taylor.

Marc Payot, President, Hauser & Wirth, says, ‘October marks a milestone moment for our gallery in Paris. On the eve of Paris+ we will open the doors of our new space in the rue François 1er, realizing a dream we’ve nurtured since Hauser & Wirth’s earliest days three decades ago. We are inaugurating that space with a major exhibition of paintings and sculptures by LA-based artist Henry Taylor, an artist whose work and ideas are just beginning to attract enthusiastic audiences in France. And several of our gallery’s artists have major institutional presentations now on view around the city, including solo exhibitions devoted to the oeuvres of Lee Lozano and Mike Kelley at Bourse de Commerce, and Lorna Simpson’s mentorship project with Reiffers Art Initiatives. All of these artists will be represented in our Paris+ booth as well—a gesture towards the connections that link the fair so strongly to the rest of the Paris art scene. For generations, Paris has valued and fostered the talents of living artists, many of whom are now landmark historical figures. In that spirit, our booth at Paris+ will pay homage to the way past and the present converge in Paris, with a selection of both historical masterworks and outstanding new works by great living artists, among them luminaries of Paris’ visual arts culture.’

Hauser & Wirth Paris
Opening on 14 October 2023, Hauser & Wirth’s inaugural exhibition in Paris will debut new works by critically acclaimed Los Angeles artist Henry Taylor, whose major career survey arrives at The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York on 4 October 2023 and will remain on view through January 2024. Occupying an entire neo-classical building at 26 bis rue François 1er dating from 1877, Hauser & Wirth Paris is situated on the right bank of the River Seine, close to the Champs-Élysées in the 8th arrondissement.

Museum Exhibitions in Paris
The presentation at Paris+ complements museum shows across the city, including ‘Lee Lozano. Strike’ at Bourse de Commerce from 20 September 2023 – 22 January 2024 and ‘Mike Kelley. Ghost and Spirit’ at the institution from 13 October 2023 – 19 February 2024. ‘Lorna Simpson x Gaelle Choisne’ will be on view at Acacias Art Center as part of Reiffers Art Initiative’s 2023 mentorship program.
