Stand D1
16 – 19 February 2023
Hauserwirth.com from 6 February 2023
Los Angeles...Now in the seventh year of its multifaceted Downtown Arts District complex, Hauser & Wirth returns to Frieze Los Angeles with a focused presentation celebrating the city through an array of works by its LA-based artists. These paintings, sculptures, and a dazzling video installation together pay tribute to the gallery’s longstanding love affair with Los Angeles, a connection that extends back over 30 years to Hauser & Wirth’s founding in 1992 and that will be further affirmed by the opening of its second LA location in West Hollywood on 15 February.
This year’s fair stand (D1) features exceptional new and recent works by Larry Bell, Mark Bradford, Charles Gaines, Richard Jackson, Paul McCarthy, Gary Simmons, Henry Taylor and Diana Thater, alongside historical masterworks by Luchita Hurtado, Mike Kelley and Jason Rhoades.

Stand highlights
A centerpiece of the fair presentation will be Diana Thater’s ‘Flora’ (2020), a four-monitor video wall work featuring a mesmerizing array of flowers in full bloom.
‘Flora’ will be presented alongside ‘Untitled’ (2022), a vibrant portrait by Henry Taylor, whose first West Coast museum retrospective, ‘B Side,’ is currently on view at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Larry Bell’s ‘Golden’ (1969/2022), a freestanding coated glass cube sculpture that plays with the relationship between matter, perception and form; ‘Shall Rest in Honor There’ (2023), a major new mixed media work by Mark Bradford; ‘Buck’s Chandelier’ (2018), a multimedia sculptural light fixture by Richard Jackson; ‘A&E, POZZZY, Santa Anita session’ (2021), a drawing by Paul McCarthy from his ongoing A&E project; and ‘Landmark’ (2008), a large-scale painting depicting the first two letters of the famed Hollywood Sign by Gary Simmons, whose first comprehensive US museum retrospective, ‘Public Enemy,’ will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago in June.
Historical masterworks in the gallery’s stand include ‘Untitled’ (1966), an early biomorphic abstract oil painting by Luchita Hurtado; Jason Rhoades’s multimedia wire shelving unit couch-like installation ‘Item #20, Passion Fruit’ (2005); and ‘Untitled (Allegorical Drawings)’ (1976), a suite of 15 framed drawings by Mike Kelley.

George Condo. People Are Strange
On 15 February, Hauser & Wirth will open its second Los Angeles gallery – a transformed Spanish Colonial Revival building in West Hollywood – with an inaugural exhibition of new paintings and a sculpture by celebrated American artist George Condo. Titled ‘People Are Strange,’ taken from the hit 1967 song of the same name by legendary – and quintessentially Los Angeles – band The Doors, Condo’s latest canvases are filled with fragmented portraits and abstractions that echo LA’s sublime dissonance.

Rita Ackermann. Vertical Vanish
Downtown at Hauser & Wirth’s Arts District complex, the North Gallery will present ‘Vertical Vanish,’ Hungarian- born artist Rita Ackermann’s first West Coast exhibition. Composed primarily of large-scale oil paintings that intuitively recast the interplay of line, color and form, the works on view make a game of repeated gestures, figures and motifs.
Zeng Fanzhi
Hauser & Wirth will also mount the first Los Angeles exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi. Featuring a series of monumental, abstract landscapes presented harmoniously in the soaring space of the South Gallery. A pioneer of contemporary Chinese art, Zeng is celebrated globally for his constantly evolving aesthetic and subject matter, and the works on view herald his latest artistic breakthroughs that contemplate the intersection of Western art and style with traditional Chinese subject matter and philosophy.
Editions
The Book Lab will exhibit selected contemporary and historical artist editions reflecting the gallery’s diverse program, and ongoing support for collaborations between artists and master printers. Divided into four sections and organized by process – woodcut, etching, lithography, screen printing – the presentation will feature examples of each medium from gallery artists and estates including Larry Bell, Jenny Holzer, Glenn Ligon, Paul McCarthy, Nicolas Party and Gary Simmons, and significant historical prints by Eva Hesse, Luchita Hurtado, Takesada Matsutani and Dieter Roth, among others.

Visit Paul McCarthy’s legendary ‘WS White Snow’ installation
16 - 19 February, 11 am – 6 pm
For four days only, LAND, The Box and Hauser & Wirth will present Paul McCarthy’s ‘WS White Snow,’ the artist’s largest single work presented in the US, originally exhibited at the Park Avenue Armory in 2013. Like many of LA’s legendary secrets, ‘WS White Snow’ has been hidden in plain sight for the past decade: an 8,800-square-foot artificial forest and a faithful replica of the artist’s family home have stood fully installed in a warehouse in East LA. Register here for the first and possibly only time to experience the work in situ.
