Hauser & Wirth’s Leading Artists at artmonte-carlo
Press Release

5 – 7 July 2024
Booth C6
Hauser & Wirth’s booth at artmonte-carlo reflects the exceptional artistic voices that have come to define its diverse program. The selection includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper and more from both contemporary and modern masters.
Booth highlights
George Condo’s new work on paper ‘Uncle Henry’ (2024) masterfully blends abstraction and figuration to create an imaginary portrait that suggests extreme psychological states. Exceptional recent works include pastels on paper straight from the studio of Catherine Goodman, teeming with energetic brushstrokes that have long been signatures of her expressionistic landscapes, and the video installation ‘Peeping Freedom for Jina Mahsa Amini’ (2023) by Pipilotti Rist, who spotlights global women rights activists that have opened a window into a modern world. Further showstoppers include a 2016 work by Cindy Sherman in which the artist photographed herself dressed up as a ‘flapper,’ and the vibrant painting ‘Withered Roses I’ (2011) by modern master Frank Bowling, who has attracted acclaim for his contributions to abstraction.
Complementing institutional solo shows, the booth showcases a range of remarkable works, such as Jenny Holzer’s monumental linen canvas ‘HEREIN’ (2022), emblematic of her Redaction Paintings. The presentation of this work corresponds with ‘Jenny Holzer: Light Line’ on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York until 29 September 2024. Bharti Kher’s painting ‘Matter II’ (2023) is part of a new suite of paintings she began in 2023, offering an investigation to space and energy. Her solo exhibition, ‘Alchemies,’ is on show at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK, until 27 April 2025.
Stand-out works on paper include Glenn Ligon’s ‘Study for Negro Sunshine #151’ (2023), exemplifying his abstracted text-based works made using oil stick and coal dust. Other Negro Sunshine drawings, as well as paintings and sculptures, will be on view in his forthcoming curatorial project and solo show, ‘All Over The Place,’ at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, UK, opening on 20 September 2024. A modern highlight includes an ethereal work by Ed Clark from 2000 made by rubbing colored pigments directly onto paper with his hands. This is presented in tandem with the artist’s first institutional exhibition in Europe at Turner Contemporary in the UK, on display until 1 September 2024.
Outstanding sculptural works by contemporary artists include the suspended mixed media piece ‘The Loop of Deep Waters 3’ (2014) by Mark Bradford, who will be the subject of a solo exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin, Germany, from 6 September 2024. Mika Rottenberg’s ‘Lampshare’ (2023) elevates reclaimed plastic to the realm of art, echoing her current solo show, ‘Antimatter Factory,’ at Museum Tinguely in Basel, Switzerland until 3 November 2024.
‘Larry Bell: Works from the 1970s’ at Hauser & Wirth Monaco
The presentation coincides with ‘Larry Bell: Works from the 1970s,’ on view at Hauser & Wirth Monaco until 31 August 2024. On display during the fair, one of the artist’s recent colored glass sculptures, ‘The Blue Gate’ (2021), will be installed in the Jardins des Boulingrins adjacent to the gallery in the heart of Monaco.
