In the summer of 2023, Hospital Rooms and Hauser & Wirth will resume their 3 year collaboration which aims to raise £1million for the arts and mental health charity.

The programme comprises a live and online auction supported by Bonhams, one of the world’s larg- est and most renowned auctioneers with 14 salerooms across the globe. Acclaimed artists including Martin Creed, Rashid Johnson, Charles Gaines, Chantal Joffe, Do Ho Suh and Caroline Walker have donated original works, Hurvin Anderson is donating two works on paper created in prepa- ration for his Hospital Rooms commission at Springfield Hospital. These will be sold during a live auction at Bonhams, 101 New Bond Street on 12 September. Bonhams have kindly waived all fees including buyer’s premium for the auction.

For our online auction, artists including Catherine Goodman & Mark Titchner have generously created new works of 75 x 60cm on canvas responding to the theme of the exhibition, Holding Space. In addition, pairs of unique cushions created by artists such as Richard Mark Rawlins & Lorna Hamilton Brown will also be available to bid on.

With an ambitious target of £500,000, the event will support Hospital Rooms to commission artworks and creative programmes including for a Children and Adolescent service in Sandwell at Black Coun- try Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Works will be viewable at Bonhams, 101 New Bond Street, from 4 September 2023.

‘HOLDING SPACE’ EXHIBITION

Hospital Rooms will transform the Hauser & Wirth London gallery into a sensorial holding space made up of components resulting from their programmes within mental health services.

Sutapa Biswas’ monumental mural originally created for Springfield University Hospital and conceived with patients in the OCD clinic will wrap the gallery space. Abbas Zahedi will share a magnetised sun created with and for patients in forensic services that contains a kinetic interactive poetry piece written by a group of people with lived experience of mental health services that met over the course of a year. Artists Alvin Ko i, Victoria Cantons, Valerie Asiimwe Amani, Giles Deacon, Richard Mark Rawlins and Katharine Lazenby use their experiences with Hospital Rooms to create a series of large scale beds and cushions within the gallery for visitors to lie on and gaze up towards a ceiling installation by Richard Wentworth. Sculptural works by Rachael Champion and illuminated sculptures by Jonathan Trayte will be encountered throughout the space.

On each hour, a piece created and recorded by students from the South West London Recovery College, with the help of composer, Alex Groves, working with National Opera Studio will resound within the space. Together the students developed new ways of breathing, humming, droning, making harmonic sounds and vocalising to develop a collective ‘fabric of sound’. During our opening, mezzo-soprano Joanna Harries and ‘cellist Lucas Robson, who also led the workshops along with Feldenkrais teacher, Jenny Hill, will interact with the piece during a live performance.

Over the course of the exhibition there will be several participatory workshops, one with an emphasis on the value of breath, sound and harmonising in collaboration with the National Opera Studio, another with an emphasis on movement in collaboration with the Ballet Boyz. There will also be a series of talks, tours and events to activate the space.

Hospital Rooms and Hauser & Wirth will continue their partnership over 3 years through a series of initiatives that continue to dramatically expand and deepen Hospital Rooms’ impact.
